Buildings and Infrastructure
Buildings and Infrastructure is a multi-disciplinary team of about 2,000 people operating in 31 SKM offices around the globe, and focuses on programme management and defence, social infrastructure (health, education, justice and sports), delivery partners, and transport infrastructure (road, rail, maritime and aviation).
The strong demand for transport and social infrastructure continued during the year, with significant new projects undertaken, particularly in Australia.
Our clients are increasingly seeking our progressive thinking and leading skills in areas such as transport planning and building services engineering to create enduring value and more sustainable outcomes.
During the year we continued to build our presence in Asia and India through programme management of ExxonMobil and Shell's retail fuel network developments, expanding our role with Shell to Indonesia and New Zealand. Our success in safety is marked by the remarkable achievement of four million hours without Lost Time Injury over six years of work on the ExxonMobil Asia Pacific Affiliates Retail Construction Program.
In social infrastructure, we were appointed with Bond Bryan Architects to the three national LCS (Learning and Skills Council) Framework panels in the UK for a massive college redevelopment program, applying our capabilities in the delivery of sustainable schools.
Our work on hospital projects includes the Dubai University Hospital and, in Australia, Fiona Stanley Hospital in Perth, Liverpool Hospital Redevelopment in Sydney and the A$1.2 billion Gold Coast University Hospital in Queensland.
The firm's transport planning skills were also applied to the high profile Waitemata Harbour Crossing Study in Auckland and the TransApex urban road project in Brisbane. In Melbourne, our transport planning, civil engineering and environmental skills were strong contributors to the delivery of the pivotal East West Link Needs Assessment study (the Eddington Report).
We are playing a significant role in work to enhance Melbourne's congestion Westgate-Monash Freeway (M1) corridor. We are a member of the Westgate Bridge Rehabilitation Alliance with VicRoads, UK design firm Flint & Neill and John Holland. This A$240 million project will strengthen the West Gate Bridge to ensure it has effective capacity for future traffic volumes.
During the year we were appointed by the Australian Department of Defence for the Hardened and Network Army, Delivery Phase, Project Manager/Contract Administrator role. This A$623 million project involves creating barracks and supporting infrastructure for 1,200 high readiness soldiers in South Australia.
With a strong focus on maintaining our market competitiveness, Buildings and Infrastructure's outlook is optimistic, particularly in the area of transport infrastructure.
Investment in rail infrastructure is growing to meet existing and future capacity for freight and passenger movements.
