Case study: Skilled Park

SKM applied innovative thinking and sustainability design principles across structural steelwork, building services and transport management to help deliver the 27,000-seat Skilled Park stadium in Queensland, Australia.

SKM applied innovative thinking and sustainability design principles across structural steelwork, building services and transport management to help deliver the 27,000-seat Skilled Park stadium in Queensland, Australia.

Skilled Park was delivered ahead of time and under budget, ready for the opening game of the 2008 National Rugby League season.

The stadium is the successful result of integrated architectural, engineering, construction management and operational management efforts between architects HOK Sport, the Queensland Government Department of Works (Project Services Division), managing contractor WATPAC, SKM and funding authority Stadiums Queensland (formerly the Major Sports Facilities Authority).

Innovation in design, construction, safety and sustainability were critical to the success of the project, with the $160 million stadium delivered ahead of time and under budget.

Structural steelwork

The stadium is a spectacular showcase for stunning and ingenious structural steelwork.

The design was delivered through a successful collaboration between the design team and subcontractors. Remarkably, the design and construction was completed within two years, including the fabrication and erection of more than 4,000 tonnes of steelwork in 18 months.

The critical roof element was engineered to be robust, yet light, elegant and cost-effective through an innovative design that reduced materials. The off-site fabrication made it both quick and easy to build compared with a traditional stadium roof structure.

The roof structure features 35-metre span cantilevered steel box rafters at 10.13-metre centres, curved in elevation, springing from the concourse level, connecting to the rear of the seating support beams and cantilevering over the seating bowl.

The stadium roof covers the seating on all four sides for patron comfort.

The design solution provided the scope for significant savings by paring back the scale of the roof, with reductions to the length of the cantilevered sections and loadings that achieved savings in the quantity of steel required.

A project is special when it tests the boundaries of what's been done before. And a project is special when it looks at the broader community context that the project is in.
