Power and Industry
The public and political debates on climate change, sustainability and economic frameworks for emissions trading illustrate the changing marketplace for Power and Industry during the year.
While we have been discussing these issues with our clients, regulators and other industry participants for some time, laws and policies are now evolving – such as a trade in carbon credits in an increasing number of countries – and this affects the economics of projects, their selection, development and delivery.
Our contemporary knowledge and experience in these fields will continue to be an important part of our business, and we expect to provide increased consulting advice on sustainability in coming years.
The global power business is dynamic, with demand in developing countries for new power supplies, and a strong demand in developed countries to upgrade supplies using more sustainable technologies.
We have proven skills in renewable technologies, such as wind and geothermal power, plus significant experience using technology to reduce thermal power station emissions.
We have offices in Australia, Asia, New Zealand and the United Kingdom, and work in many other countries.
During the year we:
- Delivered a smarter, more energy efficient way of transferring Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) into the gas grid in the UK. This uses 'waste heat' from a gas power station to warm water, which is piped to the nearby LNG terminal where it heats the LNG, converting it to gas, which goes into the mains.
- Completed on time the 350 MW Wagerup power station in Western Australia in November 2007, a project executed on an EPCM basis for Alinta Energy.
- Assisted Fonterra with the delivery of a world leading technology Dairy Waste Water Treatment Project using a specialised membrane biological reactor.
- Provided design modifications for Australia's naval fleet and participated in its new Air Warfare Destroyer programme.
- Completed a feasibility study of 'clean' coal options for thermal power stations.
- Undertook Owners Engineer services on the Hallet Wind Power Station.
The outlook in the power and industrial sectors is buoyant, with a dynamic worldwide market. Typically there has been an under-investment in power and industrial facilities, both in the developing and developed countries. Combined with growing demand, and a push for sustainable technology, SKM is well placed for the upcoming year.
The commitment by the British Government to generating 15 per cent of its electricity from renewable energy sources within 12 years is a key indication of how much attention renewable energy is set to attract.
