Occupational health and safety

From our earliest beginnings, health and safety has been an absolute imperative at SKM. And it always will be. We are determined that our employees, our clients’ employees, contractors and anyone else on site, conduct their work in a safe environment and go home in the same condition in which they arrived.

Our approach to health and safety is through adaptive thinking, where we empower all of our stakeholders to actively participate and improve our work methods, design solutions, leadership practice and personal commitment to safety outcomes. We are striving to be the benchmark in workplace wellness and safety innovation through design, not only in our industry but for any industry.

Health and safety seeks to foster and nurture an environment for our people and partners that:

  • engenders an active culture and commitment
  • fosters improvement, knowledge and learning
  • is underpinned by using design to eliminate and control hazards
  • uses innovation to creative safe and productive solutions
  • engenders purpose for safety activity
  • builds effective partnerships for people and our partner organisations
  • empowers everyone to actively contribute to safe practice

Health and Safety is underpinned by SKM’s Health, Safety and Environment Standard and supported by our Management System procedures and guidelines.

Health and safety at SKM is the responsibility of every employee. It is led by the SKM Safety and Environment Council chaired by our CEO, Paul Dougas. Our managers at all levels are held accountable for health and safety performance. Specific key performance indicators are regularly monitored to ensure we are continually improving our performance.

At SKM, we seek to learn from our Health and Safety experiences and encourage all SKM people to have input to our approach and the use of this resource centre. Our people and their knowledge are central to our continuing improvement. Our health and safety program is supported by a team of health and safety professionals appointed to manage our internal and external programs, to support project delivery, and foster capability and innovation for project safety design and delivery.
