Learning Today - Sustaining Tomorrow Teaching Resource

Learning Today Sustaining Tommorow

The New Zealand Curriculum is designed to ensure that all young New Zealanders are equipped with the knowledge, competencies, and values they will need to be successful citizens in the 21st century. Their learning is intended to contribute to the realisation of a vision of young people who will be confident, connected, actively involved, lifelong learners. A key element is a future-focus on sustainability: a holistic exploration of the long-term impact of social, cultural, scientific, technological, economic, or political practices on society and the environment.

Following collaboration with Epsom Normal Primary School and education consultants, Hooked on Thinking, SKM is proud to publish this draft unit of teaching sustainability for the essential learning areas for curriculum levels 1–3 (primary) and in some learning areas level 4 (intermediate). SKM hopes that this learning unit is valuable to teachers for use in their classroom. We look forward to working collaboratively to ensure that this unit offers a high quality resource that can help place New Zealand at the forefront of teaching the concept of sustainability.

The document can be downloaded in its entirety, or alternatively if you are looking to view a particular learning area, you can download each one individually. We recommend that these learning areas are printed in A3. If you would like to receive these in larger sizes, please contact Kenneth Alexander at SKM (KAlexander@skm.co.nz) who can provide you with a copy.

We would also welcome your feedback on this document. It will be reviewed and updated in mid 2009. Please contact Kenneth Alexander if you wish to provide any comments on the resource.
