Jarrod Darlington

Jarrod Darlington

Transportation Engineer

What’s your business unit? Infrastructure

What attracted you to SKM? I was part of the “first look” scholarship scheme, which gave me great exposure to SKM throughout my summer vacations. I was attracted to join full time by the varied work available, the fact that SKM is an international company with good prospects for moving about, but the main reason I was attracted was the people I would be working for and with.

What sort of work do you do? I do a variety of things in the transport planning team. I work on traffic impact assessments, large strategic transport studies and also do a fair amount of transport and traffic modelling, both micro and macro simulation. I also manage projects with small groups of people involved, which is great experience.

Where do you want to go in the future? In the future I’d like to move more into project management, working on larger projects which incorporate inputs from all different areas within the business, while still maintaining some technical input as well. I’m always looking to develop further and broaden my skills, which will hopefully continue to happen.

What do you love about SKM? I really enjoy the respect given to and from everyone at SKM, regardless of seniority. Often getting input from the younger graduates is important, and SKM do that really well. The awesome people really make my job what it is and SKM are committed to developing great people for the future. Reward and recognition is another thing I love about SKM, with feedback coming through various channels. It’s good to be told and recognised for when you’re doing a great job, not just when you’re doing a bad one.

Emma Collins

Emma Collins

Environmental Scientist

What’s your business unit? Water and Environment

What attracted you to SKM? During my undergraduate studies I began to discuss employment opportunities with friends and university lecturers. Consulting sounded exciting and diverse, with opportunities to further develop technical skill and project management skills. Hence I started to investigate different consulting firms and found that SKM was a widely recognised employee-owned company that aimed to make a ‘positive and enduring impact on the world’. This company goal really appealed to me as it represented the level of dedication of the company and its employees.

What sort of work do you do? I am part of the Ecology Team which sits within the NSW Natural Resource Management Section that comprises environmental scientists, ecologists and engineers. Since joining SKM I have been involved in a variety of projects including environmental flows studies, catchment management, water quality monitoring and creek restoration. Key projects include an environmental flows study for Wyong River, environmental flow monitoring for the Shoalhaven River and a review of environmental water provisions across Australia. I have also been heavily involved in project management of small to medium sized projects which can be very ex citing and challenging. The project management role has enabled me to work with a number of Federal, State and Local government agencies and build upon my communications and organisation skills. I have also had the opportunity to be involved in the NSW Graduate Committee within organises a number of social and professional development events for graduates within the region.

Where do you want to go in the future? I wish to work more closely with Relationship Client Managers and integrate sustainability in all the projects I am involved in. I would also like to work overseas, especially on international aid projects.

What do you love about SKM? enjoy working on a diverse range of projects and working for a company that is so committed sustainability.

Noel Gomes

Noel Gomes

Electrical Engineer

What’s your business unit? Power and Industry

What attracted you to SKM? The main reason I joined SKM was because SKM is a worldwide leader in the field of engineering and has a wide range of opportunities to offer both globally as well as locally. The company is very flexible, open minded and encourages people with a ‘can do attitude’ ready for a challenge. It is committed to delivering exceptional service to customers with a focus on sustainability.

What sort of work do you do? My work mainly deals with analysing and modelling electrical power networks. I have been involved with system studies, feasibility studies for wind farms, assessment of renewable energy, transmission options and connection studies for various power clients all over New Zealand.

Where do you want to go in the future? I would like to further involve myself in innovative and sustainable projects within the power industry that have a positive impact on the world.

What do you love about SKM? Working on challenging projects under the guidance of senior engineers. The invaluable experience and knowledge you gain when you work with them is very encouraging especially when you are fresh out of university. As a graduate, I am a part of SKMs four year Global Graduate Development Program which is helping me to gain skills, develop myself as a professional and assisting me in obtaining my professional accreditation. In addition to that since this program is global, you can take a transfer and still continue with it at any of the other international offices. I feel that SKM is an excellent place to start your career to ‘do more’ and ‘go further’ with tremendous world class opportunities that you will not find anywhere.
