Our continuing work with Rio Tinto Iron Ore and BHP Billiton Iron Ore (in joint venture with Fluor) on their development projects, both in Western Australia, demonstrate our capabilities in working closely with our major clients to deliver optimum value on their significant projects.

As an example, in our work for Rio Tinto Iron Ore on the Dampier Port Upgrade in the Pilbara, SKM applied technological innovation through the use of 3D modelling, modularisation and other advanced design and construction techniques to assist in the efficient and safe delivery of the A$2.0 billion project, which achieved the milestone of five million manhours worked without a Lost Time Injury.

SKM has extensive experience and capability in the design and delivery of ports and marine projects, involving multi-berth wharves, shiploaders, car dumpers, stockyard development and all associated maritime infrastructure.

Clients are recognising our strong project management and systems expertise that led to our successful appointment as Programme Manager (in joint venture with Fluor) of BHP Billiton’s on-going expansions in the Pilbara. In South America, we are working with Codelco, delivering the EPCM for the Andina project, and have worked with BHP Billiton on the Escondida mine, both in Chile.  We are also working in Peru and Brazil on iron ore project feasibility and.

In New South Wales, we completed the award-winning EPCM (in joint venture with Roberts and Schaefer) of BHP Billiton’s Mount Arthur North Coal Mine. This complex project included a high capacity coal preparation plant.

In Queensland, we have been assisting Rio Tinto Coal Australia with the expansion of the Hail Creek coal facility, and Clermont coal mine, which will have the first SKM-designed Coal Preparation Plant. 

We are also working with Rio Tinto Alcan in delivering the EPCM (in joint venture with SNC Lavalin) upgrade to Boyne Smelter in Gladstone.
